See, ‘The Indonesian who stole opium’, Spiral staircase (2005) Anröchter Limestone, 75 cm Back I wanted to sculpt a staircase and first made a model of it out of Marlstone. I thought of the handy tree-trunk stairs that the people of the Dogon region use to lean against their granaries. But a sculpture has to be interesting from all sides and this was not.

Then I tried a spiral staircase, but I managed to retain the beautiful curves they produce above each step.
