Unfired yellow clay, 13 cm
Photo: John Kleinen, 1970 My father, Wim F. Wertheim (1951) In the spring of 1951 – I was sixteen years old at the time and was learning to sculpt at the Montessori Lyceum – I made this sculpture of the head of my father, Wim F. Wertheim (1907-1998).

He didn’t have to pose and I just held the clay in my hands. There was no oven to fire the sculpture in and we didn’t really know how to do that anyway. So it’s very fragile, but my parents have always kept it safe. Only his ear has failed to stand the test of time and is a little frayed.
