Looking away (2001) Back Serpentine, 32 cm I turn away from
injustice wherever I look
killing on a global scale, sorrow
what’s beautiful falls into insignificance

while the ever-poorer poor
fleeing for a better life
that is never offered to them
are considered suspicious
while the ever-richer rich
just keep grabbing more

sowing hostility in the pursuit of profit
selling weapons like hot cakes
atomic bombs that deter
drones that aim so precisely
collateral deaths included

no tenderheartedness please
hatred in the hearts of the next of kin
keeps armaments flowing
after all is said and done

Amsterdam, 2019
